For the uninitiated - a word of warning. . .or two:

These workshops are designed specifically to allow actors to showcase their cold reading skills in front of casting directors, agents, producers and directors.  DO NOT sign up for any if you aren't up to speed on this essential skill.  At each session, you'll be handed a piece of copy you never saw before, probably be paired up with another actor whom you also never saw before, and given 10 or 15 minutes to rehearse before performing in front of someone you'd really like to impress.  Make a bad impression because you weren't prepared to work this way and guess what happens:  Nothing good.

DO NOT join one of these groups if they don't audition you first as part of their intake process.  No matter what you think about the person(s) rating your performance, if no one sees your work first, it means no one else has really been screened before going up in front of those all-important guests.  And that means you could possibly wind up in a room full of sub-par actors.  That may sound like a plus, but trust us, it ain't! You want to be a good actor surrounded by other good actors - you will all bring each other up that way.

Remember - despite the moaning and groaning you might hear from other actors, this may not be the ideal way for actors to get themselves noticed, but if you aren't taking advantage of it, you can bet your bottom dollar your competition is!  The choice is yours.

Break a leg!
